In this bachelors thesis an important question in the world and in Latvia is adressed, regarding the quality of LiDAR-derived digital terrain models. Many researches have been conducted about the factors, that influence DEM quality. This research is of importance, because Latvian Agency of Geospatial information (LGIA) have started a continous laserscanning of the Latvian territory and a DEM of Latvia is being made, using the obtained LiDAR data. The quality of the new DEM is essential to many spheres. The aim of the research is to evaluate the quality of LĢIA LiDAR-derived DEM, using the data of similar or higher accuracy – actual measurements in the field and one more LiDAR-derived DEM from another source. In this project the making of DEM and the factors, that influence the quality of the LiDAR-derived DEM, are reviewed. In the methods section of this research the quality of LGIA DEM is evaluated using statistical analysis, raster algebra and terrain profiling. It was concluded that the precision of the DEM is mostly affected by density of vegetation and complexity of terrain, and that to use LGIA DEM for hydrological modelling it should be upgraded. On average the model corresponds to the vertical accuracy of 12 cm, as claimed by LGIA.
