Academic writing in German as a foreign language is a very big challenge for the international students in German universities. The foreign rules on academic writing, cultural differences as well as the lack of experience in writing for academic purposes makes them to experience many difficulties, which the German students don’t have to deal with. In addition to that, even the advanced German language speakers are continuing to experience various difficulties by writing regarding the German grammar, vocabulary and orthography. This Paper aimed to answer to the following questions: what the academic writing difficulties encountered by writing academic Texts in German as Foreign language are, to what extend can the mother tongue or the first foreign language influence the writing process in German as a foreign language and how the international Students in Germany could possibly improve their academic writing in German as a foreign language. The small-scale questionnaire investigated the academic writing challenges of the international Students at the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. The participants of the questionnaire were 40 students of different nationalities, who were studying at the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich in the Summer Semester 2016. The results of the study showed that the certain strategies reflected in the Paper can be applied during the writing process and can improve the quality and effectiveness of the academic writing in German as a foreign language.
