In the present work a method for analysis of nanostructured multi-layered materials was developed and used for thickness determination of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) layer coated with various thin metal films. The multi-layered structures were produced by sputtering of thin (10-20 nm) gold, silver and aluminum films on 100 - 200 nm thick AAO surfaces. The method is based on measurements and analysis of reflectance spectra. A mathematical model has been used, that describes electric field components on the interfaces of the multi-layered structure and propagation of electromagnetic waves in the media, taking into account complex dielectric functions of the different materials. The estimates of the layer thickness have been calculated by fitting the model parameters to acquire best agreement with the experimental values. The experimental part of the work consists of automatization of spectral measurements and of spectral mapping. In a numerical study parameters of multilayer structure have been optimized for maximization of electric field in the vicinity of the metal surface using the mathematical model. The results will be useful for optical signal amplification in planned fluorescence measurements.
