In order to assess the development of P. gigantea in conifer stumps created during precommercial thinnings, an experiment was established in Vidusdaugavas forestry, where Scots pine and Norway spruce stumps with small diameter (3 – 12 cm) were treated with „Rotstop” and two P. gigantea isolates from Latvia. After a year samples were collected from stumps and the development of P. gigantea was analysed. Isolates of P. gigantea developed in pine stumps more frequently than in spruce stumps. Natural P. gigantea infection was detected in 20% of control stumps. The incidence of development between isolate PG137 from Latvia and commercially produced „Rotstop” did not differ significantly. In 81% of stumps colonised by P. gigantea, its mycelium reached the root collar, which could favour the reduction of secondary spread of Heterobasidion spp. in stumps with small diameter. In future studies it is planned to analyse the development of P. gigantea in conifer stumps with a small diameter two years after the treatment.
