In 1968 Hungarian biologist, botanist Aristid Lindenmayer came up with a way to describe the development of plants – Lindenmayer system. He tried to depict a process of plant growth and development, which arose a formalized way to do so. At first, L-systems were meant to use to describe simple multicellular organisms, but in course of time the spectrum of system’s usage increased. This thesis looks at possibilities to use L-system’s formalized description as instrument to generate 2D and 3D plant models. The aim of this work is to research the possibilities of describing the plant model using L-systems, look at the tools available for working with L-systems; create an L-system which can generate a plant in three dimensions. The understanding of L-systems and its variations was gained, the review of the tools and its possibilities for working with L-systems was made, as well as many plant models for demonstration purposes.
