As complex as the term “public speaking skills” may seem, indeed very frequently people need to use these particular skills in different everyday situations. According to her experience and observations, the author of the Diploma Paper believes that speaking is the least developed skill for the majority of EFL students; thus, also public speaking skills very often are not sufficiently developed. Therefore, in order to find out how conference project can help to develop students’ public speaking skills in English lessons in Form 7, a case study was conducted at Līvāni Secondary School No.1. With the aim to introduce students to aspects and elements of public speaking, different tasks were carried out during English lessons. In order to gain data, questionnaires for students, evaluation by jury, student self-evaluations and an interview with the English teacher of the particular class were used. Finally, at the end of the project a conference was held where students performed. Eventually, it was explored that conference project can help to develop students’ public speaking skills rather considerably. Moreover, positive attitude towards public speaking and development of these skills was created as well as students’ motivation to take part in similar conferences further on was fostered. In addition, also teacher was inspired to continue to help students develop their public speaking skills in English lessons after the project.
