The bachelor’s thesis “Grassland soil carpological research” is dedicated to an issue of seed persistance in soil and the use of seed material to forecast potential vegetation or defining its historical structure, because this issue is under- researched in Latvia. The research that my bachelor’s work deals with is important because it would help to get more information of the seed material that can be recognized in soil nowadays. The lessons learned during work process can be used to explain environmental conditions. In Latvia to this day the studies of seeds in natural environmental have been developed in a very fragmented manner. The seed material has been widely used in characterizing paleoenvironment (in archeology, paleobotany etc.) as well as forecasting weed infestation to choose the necessary limitation techniques for it at the right time. The goal of my bachelor’s work is to analyze the diversity of soil seed bank of grassland to determine the possibilities of using distinctive seed material in environmental studies. My study has showed that the soil seed bank has an important role in forming the vegetation of the soil. 24 soil samples were taken to characterize the variety of seeds in the soil of the grassland in “Klincenieki” farm, and 1783 seeds were identified altogether. In these 24 samples that were collected from a grassland, the most common seeds turned out to be from Chenopodiaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Ranunculaceae, Polygonaceae, Labiatae and Cyperaceae families. The total amount of work is 54 pages. It includes 12 images, 1 table and 3 attachments.
