In any newspaper article it is very important that the text is easily understood, sentences are linked, and readers easily get the idea of the text. This research examines the initial words of the sentences and their categories. Comparison is also made between two online newspapers studying the use of sentence initial linking adverbials. The goal of the research paper is to analyse the use of sentence initial linking words in the articles of the online newspapers and what kind of initial sentence adverbials are used in online newspapers. The theoretical part deals with the theories according to Halliday and Hasan (1976), Biber et al. (1999) and Leech and Svartvik (2013), and Flavia Cavaliere (2012). The empirical part is based on the theory by Biber et al. (1999). Discourse analysis demonstrates that the quality press online newspaper The Guardian mostly uses sentence initial linking adverbial “however” which is part of contrast/concession sentence initial linking adverbials. However the popular press newspaper The Sun mostly uses sentence initial linking adverbial “so” which is part of result/inference sentence initial linking adverbials. The most frequent usage of sentence initial linking adverbials is in the business-related articles. The most frequently used sentence initial linking adverbials are from contrast/concession sentence initial linking adverbials.
