The title of this Bachelors paper is “The Development of the Confucian Democracy in Korea.” South Korea is a country where confucianisms is still very powerful. The Korean peninsula has inherited the confucian culture during the 14th century, when it oficially became the idiology of the Joseon dynasty. During the Joseon dynasty the teachings of neoconfucianism were strongly incorporated into the countrys politics and in order to distance themselves from the Chinese influence, Koreans used these teachings and adjusted them accordingly to their country’s needs. The changes in the society and politics, that were present during the Joseon dynasty made it slighty similar to the Western democracy that we know today. Thanks to those democratic characteristics that were present in Korea during the Joseon dynasty, contemporary South Korea has found a way to succsessfully merge the democratic values with the confucianism. The second part of this thesis focuses on the development of the democracy of South Korea. After enduring many years of authoritarian rule, South Korea was ready to fight for their freedom, and to do that they combined their wish for a democratic Korea with their ancient confucian values. In doing so the civil society of South Korea developed rapidly and with time they were able to attain the democracy, thay they dreamed about for so many years. The main purpose of this paper is to understand how big of a role confucianism played in the democratization of South Korea, as well as to think about the idea of Asian values and whether or not they are an obstacle to democracy.
