The contents of this research are about Japanese history and the controversy that surrounds the Yasukuni shrine from 1869. – 2015. Its origin, meaning to the Japanese citizens of today and countless conflicts that “haunt” the shrine – these are a few of the topics that will be present in this research. The construction of the Yasukuni shrine during the Meiji restoration could be considered as the root of the fanatical militarism that consumed Japan, because all of the soldiers and those devoted to the Empire of Japan were enshrined there as gods. This was considered as one of the highest honors that a person could have at the time. The history of Japan, beginning from the Boshin war and Satsuma rebellion helped to create the structure of the Empire of Japan. After the rebellion there was a huge leap in Japans infrastructure, therefore the traditional mindset that had been in place since the days of the Shogunate was falling rapidly. After these events and first major victories in the wars with its neighboring countries, the importance of the Yasukuni shrine increased and it was considered to be one of the symbols of the Empire of Japan. During the Second World War the Allies had already heard of the Japanese fanatic devotion to their emperor and the cruelty that they unleashed on the civilians of the countries that they had subjugated. The Nanjing “massacre” is one of well known atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese where estimated 300,000 civilians lost their lives. During the research, the thoughts of the Japanese citizens and its neighboring countries will be analyzed. Historical evidence will also be analyzed that are linked to some of the disputes about Yasukuni. At the end of this research there will be answers on whether or not the controversy behind the Yasukuni shrine can be ended in the near future.
