Pētījumā piedalījušās 135 sievietes vecumā no 17 līdz 65 gadiem, internetā anonīmi aizpildot aptauju, kurā bija iekļauta Kompulsīvās ēšanas aptauja (The Compulsive Eating Scale (CES), Kagan & Squires, 1984), Emocionālās ēšanas aptauja (Emotional Eating Scale (EES); Arnow, Kenardy, & Agras, 1995), aptauja emociju regulācijas grūtību noteikšanai (Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale DERS, Gratz & Roemer, 2004), un Distresa tolerances aptauja (Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS; Simons and Gaher 2005). The aim of the study was to establish whether there is a connection among compulsive eating, emotional eating, difficulties in emotion regulation and distress in women. 135 women aged 17 to 65 took part in the study by filling out an online questionnaire consisting of The Compulsive Eating Scale (CES, Kagan & Squires, 1984); Emotional Eating Scale (EES; Arnow, Kenardy, & Agras, 1995); Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS, Gratz & Roemer, 2004); and Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS; Simons and Gaher 2005). The results of the study indicate that women who engage in compulsive or emotional eating behaviour tend to have various difficulties with the awareness and acceptance of their emotions and with impulse control, as well as difficulties to tolerate anxiety and distress, and a tendency to view their stress as something entirely negative. The results of the factor analysis show that out of the factors analysed in this study the compulsive eating could be predicted by emotion awareness and acceptance difficulties and struggling to concentrate on purposeful actions when feeling any vague agitation or emotion. The symptoms of emotional eating could be predicted by difficulties to recognize emotions and a tendency to attribute strong negative implications to any kind of stress. The results of the study suggest that a significant part of work with compulsive or emotional eaters should be devoted to the improvement of their emotion awareness and regulation significant skills as well as to diminishing the anxiety, specifically – the distress intolerance.
