In general the Baltic Sea sediments ecological status by eco-toxicological studies are characterized as “good” / “moderate” (52% and 25% respectively) indicating better environment quality in the Bothnian Sea and the Gulf of Riga, but exceeding the limit of good environmental quality (GES) was found in the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Gdansk and Belt Sea. Different toxico-resistance of potentially polluted Baltic Sea sediments was found with standard species (Monoporeia affinis, Corophium volutator and Hyalella azteca) and in this thesis recommended amphipods species (Bathyporeia pilosa, Pontogammarus robustoides and Gmelinoides fasciatus) showing more meaningful difference in the Baltic Sea sediment quality assessment - exceeding the Good Environmental Status (>GES) boundaries with standard species in only 8% of cases and with recommended species in 63% of cases (>GES). Similar results of toxico-resistance were found with standard test species to heavy metals showing higher sensitivity of recommended species and in bioassay the necessity to use the region’s most sensitive amphipod species, like a G. fasciatus and P. robustoides. The embryo malformation test for sediment quality assessment as a general biomarker for pollution effects in amphipods appeared to be more sensitive, testifying to affecting the development factors of the organisms in their natural environment. For sediment quality assessment there is a need to use several simultaneous multiple methods as evidenced by the combined study using TRIAD method of the Gulf of Riga sediments - the individual chemical analysis, biological diversity and ecotoxicological showed similar tendencies and in general the Gulf of Riga sediments’ potential risk menace displayed the following - 54% of cases “likely unimpacted”, 23% “possibly impacted” and 23% “likely impacted”. Methodologically experimental study results indicated that the bioassay environmental conditions - temperature, stage of development of test organisms, sample storage and its collection seasons are important when determining the sediment ecological quality.
