Nowadays the number of pharmacies in Latvia, where extemporaneous medicine can be prepared, has declined (ex tempore means “at the time” in Latin). However, this service is still important and necessary, because industrially produced medicine can not completely fulfill the demand for individual approach in medicine production. The aim of the present work was to summarize theoretical information about the extemporaneous prescriptions and compounding of medicines, and practically investigate extemporaneous prescriptions of Dzirciema pharmacy. Two tasks were proposed in the present work. The first one: to summarize existing information about the history of pharmacy (as a science) and pharmacies in Latvia, about types of extemporaneous formulation, and about legal documents which are governing the production of medicine in Latvian pharmacies. The second one was a practical research: analyze and process extemporaneous prescriptions (extemporaneous formulation ) of Dzirciema pharmacy in the period of six months. The obtained results allowed to make the following conclusions. Firstly, there is only a small amount of information available about the extemporaneous medicine form technology (extemporaneous formulation) in general, as well as in newest sources. Secondly, extemporaneous medicine is still in high demand. Thirdly, the most frequent types of extemporaneous medicine in Dzirciema pharmacy (in the period of six months) are nasal drops, nasal ointments, suspensions and other ointments. Fourthly, the most frequent medical specialities for the use of extemporaneous medicine are dermatovenerology, otorhinolaryngology and the health of oral cavity.
