The topic of the master’s thesis is “Social work to promote the employment of people with mental illnesses in the municipality of Riga.” The goal is to analyse how the social work to promote the employment of people with mental illnesses in the municipality of Riga is organised. The theoretical framework of the paper consists of the general systems theory and the recovery model. A qualitative research with semi-structured interviews and analysis of experience stories has been conducted as part of the empirical research. In the empirical research has been identified a situation where in the municipality of Riga the people with mental illnesses are not considered as a separate target group in the context of social work. For this reason social services promoting employment as well as other types of support for the promotion of employment are not directed towards the betterment of the situations of concrete persons with mental illnesses and they do not give the desired result.
