Bismuth chalcogenides such as bismuth selenide and bismuth telluride have become materials of interest, because of their recently discovered strong topological insulator properties as well as their excellent thermoelectric properties. Topological insulators (TIs) work as electric insulators in bulk, but are conductors on their surface states, which opens up new opportunities in developing efficient thermoelectric materials. In this work, different thickness bismuth selenide and bismuth telluride thin films, as well as they were consecutively synthesized on top of each other. Thin films electric and thermoelectric properties were determined and their morphology, thickness and chemical composition were examined. Properties and characteristics of consecutively synthesized bismuth chalcogenide thin films were compared to single Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 thin films. It was found out that thermoelectric properties such as power factor and Seebeck coefficient of consecutively synthesized bismuth chalcogenide thin films were better than those of single Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 films. This may lead to potential improvement of figure of merit of bismuth chalcogenide thin films, ultimately boosting the thermoelectric properties of these materials.
