Globaly the number of patients with type 2 diabetes is increasing rapidly. In the case of type 2 diabetes, the body is not able to use insulin as it is necessary. The body becomes resistant to insulin and combats this disease by producing additional insulin at the very beginning of the disease. However, over time it is no longer possible and blood glucose levels increase. Some patients can control their blood glucose levels with a healthy lifestyle and diet, but there are patients who need additional anti-diabetic medications. Metformin is one of the most widely used drug in the treatment of type 2 diabetes worldwide. Also commonly used drugs for treatment of type 2 diabetes are sulfonylureas, sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors and insulin.
