Darba teorētiskais pamatojums balstās Ērvinga Gofmaņa dramaturģiskās analīzes principos, to papildina rituālkomunikācijas teorētiskie koncepti. Par pētījuma metodi izvēlēta kontentanalīze. Pētījuma rezultāti liecina, ka vēstuļu loma I pasaules karā bijusi daudznozīmīga. Tās kalpojušas kā: (1) emocionāls balsts; (2) sniegušas praktisku labumu; (3) informatīvs līdzeklis; (4) drošības apliecinājums; (5) iesaistes līdzeklis tuvinieku dzīvē; (6) prestiža apliecinājums; (7) garlaicības kliedēšanas līdzeklis. Cenzūra izpaudusies vēstuļu satura ierobežošanā, uz vēstulēm tā novērojama svītrojumu, zīmogu, atklātu vēstuļu formātu veidā. Friča Pumpura dramaturģijā izmantoti: (1) vizuālie elementi kā kaltēti ziedi, paša veidoti zīmējumi; (2) tekstuāli elementi kā izdaiļots rokraksts, stilizēti burti; (3) saturiski elementi kā tēlainie izteiksmes līdzekļi, filozofiskas pārdomas, emocionālu tekstu paušana. Atslēgas vārdi: The title of the thesis is "The role of written letters in the communication between Fricis Pumpurs, a teacher at the 2nd Puze primary school, and his relatives from 1914 to 1918". The purpose of the thesis is to develop deeper knowledge of the elements of drama used by Fricis Pumpurs in his letters, gain knowledge of the impact of censorship, and analyse the role of letters during World War I. The theoretical justification of the work is based on the principles of the dramaturgical analysis of Erving Goffman, along with the theoretical concepts of ritual communication. The research method used is content analysis. The results of the study showed that during World War I the role of letters was significant. Letters served as (1) an emotional support, provided (2) practical benefits, were used as (3) an informative tool, as (4) a tool to gain knowledge of others wellbeing and security, as a way to stay (5) involved in the lives of the relatives, for (6) prestige purposes and/or (7) to relieve boredom. In these letters, censorship has been manifested in limiting the content of letters, which was evident due to forbidden subjects that were scribbled out, a censor’s stamp on the letter, as well as opened letters that were taped back shut. Throughout correspondences, Fricis Pumpurs uses (1) different visual elements, such as dried flowers, his own drawings, (2) textual elements, such as handwriting beautification, stylized lettering, (3) literary techniques, such as figurative language, philosophical reflections and emotive language.
