The thesis “Ecclesiology: An Opportunity or Barrier for Unity of Lutherans and Catholics?” explores the achievements of the five-decade long dialogue between the Vatican and World Lutheran Federation. Explicitly it looks at the understanding of the Church, which has historically this has been one of the most divisive questions for both denominations. The thesis proposes the hypothesis: Catholics and Lutherans have reached a differentiated consensus in their understanding of the Church. Based on this hypothesis the present thesis analyses documents from ecumenical dialogues which address the understanding of the Church as the main component of the dialogue. Further, the main disagreements and successes are identified by comparatively analyzing the documents. The conclusion of the thesis approves the hypothesis. Additionally, within the context of the situation in Latvia the thesis concludes that currently the most notable hindrances to unity are different from earlier theological disagreements.
