Biber, Johansson, Leech, Conrad, and Finegan (1999) and other widely known studies have found that different verb forms are used in different registers. The goal of the present research is to identify and highlight the most common tendencies of verb use in the Introduction section of research articles that concern applied linguistics. In order to detect the verb forms, the research method chosen was a case study of twenty-two research article introduction sections. The study revealed that verbs are mostly used in the past and present tense, almost none in future time. Sentences are constructed in a manner that favours the active voice rather than the passive voice.
