The topic of this master’s thesis is “Rendition of Korean Proper Nouns in Latvian” and this work looks at the current situation in the rendition of Korean proper nouns, mainly people’s names, in the Latvian language. Now that more and more students choose Korean studies as their main field, it is important to start systematizing the way how these studies are conducted. A part of the study process is translation and the creation of new texts, all which include the rendition of Korean proper nouns as well. The currently existing rules and suggestions for the rendition of Korean proper nouns are followed rarely and so taking into consideration that and the observed current situation, the following hypothesis was put forward for this work: Korean proper nouns rendered in media etc. up to now are not similar to their pronunciation and writing in Korean language, which is against the principles of rendition in the Latvian language. Following this hypothesis, the main objectives of this work were: •in the 1st part of the thesis to describe the system of rendition of proper nouns in the Latvian language, to research the ways other Asian language proper nouns are rendered in Latvian and to consequentially make suggestions for the rendition of Korean proper nouns in Latvian; •in the 2nd part of the thesis to describe the Korean writing and transcription systems, after which by comparing Latvian and Korean phonetically to create a transcription system that could be used for the rendition of proper nouns; •in the 3rd part of the thesis to gather data on the current situation of rendition of Korean proper nouns in two Latvian news sites and after analysing said data to conclude whether or not the hypothesis is true. After the mentioned objectives were achieved it was concluded that the hypothesis is correct and the rendering of Korean proper nouns up to now is against the principles used in the Latvian language, because the rendition does not correspond with the original pronunciation and writing.
