Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that manifests with progressive cognitive impairment. The aim of this thesis was to determine effects of metformin on spatial learning and memory in Alzheimer's disease model rats, as well as to assess effects of metformin on expression of GLUT3 and GSK-3 in cortex and hippocampus of model rats. Morris water maze results show that metformin treatment improves spatial learning and memory in Alzheimer's disease model rats. Western blot results indicate that metformin (75 vai 100 mg/kg) normalizes expression of GLUT3 and GSK-3 in rat brain cortex and hippocampus after streptozocin injection to control level. Metformin could be effective drug to regulate glucose homeostasis in Alzheimer's disease.
