In this paper are described two mathematical modeling methods and with those related methods. One of them is generalized linear model (glm) and the other one is generalized additive model (gam). Here are described the estimation methods and criteria which are used to analyze and estimate such models. The practical part of this work is done in the program R. Practical work consist of comparing generalized linear and generalized additive models with aim to understand the differences between the models and to learn when to choose one or other of those models. Practical work conclusions are that for data which are not simple depending on explanatory variables that are selected for modeling output variable the generalized additive model works better.
