Mirstīgums un līdzjūtība apgaismības kultūrā A. Millera romānos “Ģeniālās sāpes” un “Šķīsts”

A. Millera romāni “Ģeniālās sāpes” un “Šķīsts” apskata tādas tēmas kā emocijas, žēlsirdība, līdzjūtība, empātija, sāpes un mirstīgums 18. gs. kultūrā jeb apgaismības laikmetā. Bakalaura darba ietvaros tiek analizēts kā apgaismības kultūra tiek atveidota A. Millera romānos, balstoties uz emociju, līdzjūtības un ētikas teorijām, kā arī tiek aplūkots vēsturiskās daiļliteratūras žanrs. Balstoties uz analīzes rezultātiem var secināt, ka “Ģeniālās sāpes” un “Šķīsts” attēlo apgaismības identitāti un apspriež tās nošķirtību no emocijām, kas noved pie nespējas just līdzjūtību pret citiem. A. Millers kritizē 18. gs. domāšanas veidu, parādot, ka apsēstība ar saprātu noved pie emocionāla nejūtīguma un nespējas būt līdzjūtīgam pret citiem. Andrew Miller’s Ingenious Pain and Pure deal with such phenomena as emotion, compassion, sympathy, empathy, pain, and mortality in the society and culture of the 18th century known as the Age of Reason. The present paper focuses on the representation of the Enlightenment culture in the novels within the interdisciplinary theoretical framework that draws on theories of historical fiction, of emotion in general, and of empathy and sympathy in particular, of the connection between emotion and literature, and of the connection between narrative and ethics. The analysis and interpretation carried out in the present paper reveal that Ingenious Pain and Pure portray and examine the Enlightenment self and its detachment from emotion, which leads to its inability to sympathize with others. Miller criticizes the mindset of the 18th century showing that obsession with reason leads to emotional numbness and an inability to be fully compassionate.
