The author of this Doctoral Thesis provides an analysis of a rural discourse that is introduced by the printed media, and its changes within the time of 23 years (1989–2012)
due to socioeconomic reasons and other circumstances. The research focuses on the
meaning of the farming, countryside and its people represented by the press, by paying
attention to the context of national identity and social memory.
The theoretical part of this Thesis offers an explanation of the link between
countryside and nation, and theories regarding national identity, social memory and the
role of communication in the process of re-imagination of nation. The author also
provides a comprehensive description of Latvian national identity conception, the
development of the countryside and agriculture, media environment and the former
research results of this topic for a better understanding of the context.
The empirical data are gathered by multiple-case study approach using discourse
historical analysis and the quantitative content analysis. The results are revealed in a
chronological sequence on the basis of a thorough analysis of contradictory discourse
pairs. Although in length of time rural discourse obtained characteristics of
deromantization and pragmatic, the contrary discourse of countryside romantization,
most notably begun during the Third national awakening, interweaves the entire study
period. It consists of statements and arguments about countryside, farmers and agriculture
based on emotions and social memory rather than rational criteria.
