Tika veikts korelatīvs pētījums, izmantojot instrumentus: “Vecāku kompetences izjūtas skala” (Parenting sense of competence scale, Johnston & Mash, 1989). The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between preschool parents used discipline techniques and sense of parental competence. Data was collected from 50 parents (44 mothers and 6 fathers) with at least one child aged 3 to 5 years (25 daughters and 25 sons: 23 were 3 years old, 16 were 4 years old and 11 were 5 years old). The following tools were used in current correlative study: 1.“Parenting Sense of Competence Scale” (Parenting Sense of Competence Scale, Johnston & Mash, 1989). This scale was adapted in Latvian by Inga Skreitule-Pikse and Sandra Sebre (Skreitule-Pikse & Sebre, 2008). 2.“Survey on disciplinary techniques”, it has been established for the purposes of this study. It is based on surveys on discipline and parenting (Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (Alabama Parenting Questionnaire, Frick, Shelton, & Wooton, 1996; Adapted in Latvian by L. Kalnina (Kalnina, 2006); The Dimensions of Discipline Inventory (Straus, M. A., Fauchier, A., 2007); The Discipline Survey (Socolar, R., Savage, E., Devellis R. F., Evans, H., 2004)), and on research and articles on child discipline (Smith, et. al, 2004, Harris, et al., 2015, O’Leary, Poulos, Devine, 1972). A statistically significant negative association was found between Total Parental Competence with ineffective disciplinary techniques such as Shame, Reprimand, Physical Punishment, Deprivation of a Thing or Inhibition of an Activity, and Ignoring. Parental Competence Scale Satisfaction with the role of parents showed a negative statistically significant relationship with all ineffective disciplinary techniques - Shame, Reprimand, Physical Punishment, Deprivation of a Thing or Inhibition of an Activity, Strengthening Negative Behavior and Ignoring. Parental Competence Scale Effectiveness showed a negative statistically significant correlation with only two ineffective disciplinary techniques- Shame and Ignoring. Parental Competence Scale Satisfaction also showed a negative statistically significant relationship with one effective discipline technique - “Time-out”.
