Due to climate change, the composition of tree species changes as the environmental conditions in the forest change. In the future, to ensure the qualitative and quantitative requirements for timber production, forest management may be revisited in commercial forests, by envisaging the cultivation of introduced tree species, for example European larch. This requires an assessment of the factors that limit the tree-ring width (TRW) growth of a particular tree species. To assess which are the limiting meteorological factors that impact the TRW of European larch, samples were taken in ten forest stands in Latvia, which were later processed and analyzed. The samples were cross-dated, obtaining the chronology of each forest stand. To characterize the similarity of the annual radial increment variability for each chronology, a Principal component analysis (PCA) of key factors was performed. To assess the relationship between annual width and climatic conditions, a correlation analysis was performed between the chronology of each sampling plot and the climatic data of the corresponding sampling plot – the average monthly temperature and precipitation to determine which of these climatic factors are related to larch annual width. The results of the analysis of the main components indicated that there is a tendency between forest stands, which can be divided into two groups – forest stands that grow in a climate affected by the proximity of the sea and the continental climate. When comparing all forest stands, the most common limiting factor impacting the radial growth of European larch is the temperature of the end season of the previous vegetation. Which can be explained by the balance of reproductive growth. Master's thesis was developed at the Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava" and the Department of Botany and Ecology of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Latvia in 2014 and 2021.
