White phosphorus is a molecular crystal consisting of tetrahedral P4 molecules. Their relative arrangement in the crystallographic cell changes when material goes between the three known phases namely α, β and γ. White phosphorus has been known for a long time, yet little research can be found on it as a molecular crystal. Especially when looking from the viewpoint of vibrational spectroscopy which could for example confirm or deny the validity of crystal structure obtained from x-ray diffraction analysis. In this work the Raman spectra of white phosphorus α and β phases are obtained at different temperatures in an interval of -125°C to -20°C. A hypothetical high symmetrical α phase crystal structure is proposed, and classical lattice dynamics model has been created for this structure. Experimental Raman spectra of β phase is compared to spectra obtained through ab initio calculations for a structure reported in literature. This work shows accordance between the experimental Raman spectra and the calculated spectra for the compared crystal structure. It is confirmed that the β phase Raman spectra shows six lines in E band, nine lines in T2 band and three in A1 band. All lines in these three bands start to indistinguishably overlap when material goes into α phase. A phase transition is observed between -65.3°C and -63.6°C as concluded from the changes in Raman spectra. The changes are the most pronounced in E band, partially detectable in T2 band and not found in A1 band.
