The aim of the master’s thesis is to research the novel “The Leopard” (Il Gattopardo) (1958) by writer and prince Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, describing it in the context of European (also Latvian) literature and psychoanalysis in theory and practice. This paper seeks to examine the biographies of Lampedusa and his wife Wolff – psychoanalyst and baroness –, to characterize the novel “The Leopard”, as well as to focus on its reception. A special attention is paid to the portrayal of the characters. They are described in the psychoanalytic way, that is, expressing their concerns regarding the soul. Overall, the master’s thesis shows that “The Leopard” is in some degree a novel of ideas (very popular in Italy, not so much – in Latvia) and to interpret works of literature via psychoanalysis is a fruitful technique for further research in literary studies.
