This research examines the link between language (French and Latvian) and affectivity. In order to achieve the aim of the research, we performed the analysis of words of emotion related with six basic emotions, namely, surprise, anger, happiness, fear, disgust, and sadness. The first three chapters of the research are devoted to the theoretical study of affectivity, language and cognition, as well as the expression of emotions with linguistic means. In the empirical part of the research, the analysis of 1424 words of emotion in French and Latvian is presented. The results show us a greater number of emotion words in French. Combinatorial analysis allows us to see the differences in semantic behavior, especially for two emotions (surprise and anger), between the two linguistic systems, as well as the cognitive scenario in the affective lexicons. Despite the differences, the elaborate criteria for word selection and analysis were easily applied to both languages.
