The aim of the present master thesis is to analyze the aesthetics of the postcolonial uncanny in Amitav Ghosh’s novel “The Calcutta Chromosome” (1995). Amitav Ghosh is a highly regarded author and his works have made an important contribution to postcolonial discourse. The theoretical background of the thesis is based on the theories that are relevant to understanding the postcolonial uncanny, such as postcolonialism, postmodernism and the neo-Victorian gothic. The empirical part of the thesis applies theoretical principles to interpret the novel. The main theories on the uncanny are taken from Sigmund Freud’s essay “The Uncanny” (1919) and Nicholas Royle’s book “The Uncanny” (2003). The present master thesis proves that Ghosh uses postcolonial uncanny to question colonial history and to deconstruct the colonial narrative from the indigenous people’s perspective.
