The bachelor's thesis “The perception of parents on the importance of reading books to their preschool aged children” is a study on parents' knowledge and comprehension of the child’s benefits – especially in the field of education – if parents read to them on a regular basis till starting school. The researched problem is addressed through Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital – it is a type of capital taught and transferred within the family and educational institutions pertaining to knowledge, norms and values. The research aims to determine the parents' knowledge and understanding of the child's benefits if the parents regularly read books to them at preschool age. The results of the study reveal that although all the subjects of the study – the parents – perceive reading books as an essential cultural capital for their child's future and contribution to their own and the child's relationship, most of them often read less to their pre-schoolers during the week than recommended to promote the child's literacy. At the same time, the results also show a significant lack of information about certain benefits and aspects of reading aloud and put forward ideas about the motivating factors for parents to read more often to their child. Keywords: reading aloud, books, education, parents, children, cultural capital.
