The topic of the Master’s thesis is „Metaphors in patient healthcare workers mutual communication”. The aim of the thesis was to identify the most commonly used metaphors between healthcare workers and patients and to find out how patients and healthcare workers feel about using metaphors in their mutual communication. My master’s thesis assignments were to analyse Imogene King’s theory of goal attainment and to analyse Ida J. Orland’s Deliberative Nursing Process Theory; to study metaphor, it’s meaning and usages in George Layoff’s and Michael Johnson’s book „Metaphors we live by”; to gather literature regarding metaphors in medicine; to compile a survey about the usage of metaphors in patient – healthcare worker mutual communication. To survey patients and healthcare staff about using metaphors. To compile the data from surveys, try to find causations in metaphors usage, to process data with Microsoft Excel and SPSS programs; to describe the data, that was extracted from surveys and to make conclusions. Research question: How a metaphor affects the patient – healthcare workers mutual communication? In the study I have used a mixed study design – quantitative and qualitative research methods. An anonymous questionnaire with multiple choice questions, as well as sentence finishing tasks was given to patients and healthcare workers. 38 healthcare workers and 43 patients have filled in the questionnaire. In the survey the most common metaphors given by patients and healthcare workers were identified. The factors that could influence one’s opinion about the usage of metaphors were analysed. The thesis consists of 103 pages and includes 21 images, 20 tables, 4 appendices and 54 sources of books and others information sources.
