The topic of this bachelor’s thesis is “The Image of the Fox in Korean Mythology”. Asian mythology consists of a large variety of different creatures, and the nine-tailed fox is one of them. The emphasis in this paper is on the difference between Chinese nine-tailed fox huli-jing, Japanese nine-tailed fox kitsune and Korean nine-tailed fox kumiho, as well as their traditional representation in each corresponding culture. Chinese ideology and philosophy has made a strong impact on Korean view on the foxes and their general purpose in Korean oral folk tales and legends, however it is essential for this paper to differentiate between them, to study the symbolism it represents in Asian culture, as well as the modern aspect of the fox image in mass media. The thesis has three main parts. First two parts consist of three chapters, the last main part consists of one chapter. The first part further explains the history of the fox in Chinese culture, as well as its’ roots and origins, then expanding to the Japanese fox image and explaining its’ religious purpose. As for the Korean counterpart, during the process of the research it was determined that the kumiho is an evil fox spirit, the only one in East-Asian mythology, which purely consists of evil motives and thus is not connected to any saints or Gods of Korean mythology, often portrayed as a demon on itself. upon the terminology and etymology of Juche, as well as a brief history of the Korean peninsula, which shows the historical background for the creation of the ideology. In the second part, the paper studies the symbolic meaning of the fox’s image in China and Korea, explaining the numerological meaning and the meaning of color symbolism. It has been concluded that modern Korean society views kumiho differently, drastically changing its’ image from purely negative to positive, kind, loving and naïve.
