Many countries have implemented protective measures such as providing foster families for children affected by domestic violence. But as domestic abuse commonly only occurs ‘behind closed doors’, it must be assumed that it is much more prevalent than national statistics may indicate. Additionally, the definition of domestic abuse varies and it is often considered uncomfortable or inappropriate for discussion. Both of these factors make gathering accurate data about domestic abuse challenging but an accurate understanding of the issue, it’s short- and long-term consequences is of paramount importance to improve national preventive initiatives and support programs for those affected by domestic abuse. Objective: An online survey was conducted to study the psychologic and psychiatric effects of domestic abuse in childhood on young adults studying at university level with the aim of providing data to endorse the implementation of preventive programs and child and adolescent support programs. To do so, the Chi2-test was used on the screening results for anxiety disorders (GAD-7), depression (PHQ-9), and PTSD (PC-PTSD-5) obtained for those participants who believed they experienced domestic abuse (DA) and those who did not (NDA). None of these Chi2-tests found any relation between the two groups and the degree of anxiety or depression or the detection of PTSD on the screening tests. Materials and methods: An anonymous Google Forms questionnaire including screening questions for anxiety disorders (GAD-7), depression (PHQ-9), and PTSD (PC-PTSD-5) was distributed in English, Latvian, and German using social media and messenger applications as well as Emails. The results of 69 participants were analysed using Microsoft Office applications. All participants were informed that their results would be used in an anonymised form and that they did not have to respond to any of the sensitive questions to avoid psychological unpleasantness. Results: The study found that psychological abuse is more common than physical abuse, both in direct and indirect child abuse. Further, less frequent domestic abuse is more common than daily domestic abuse overall. Only few participants who had experienced domestic abuse during their childhood and were diagnosed with a psychologic or psychiatric condition linked this to their experiences with domestic abuse. Conclusions: This study could not detect a significant relationship between domestic abuse and psychologic or psychiatric diagnoses.
