The title of the master’s thesis is Analysis of media literacy levels and the factors that influence it among Latvian university students. The aim of the master's thesis is to determine the level of media literacy among Latvian students as well as to determine the factors that affect it. The theoretical part consists of a review of the literature on the understanding of the concept of media literacy, its development and the factors that influence media literacy, as well as the relationship between media literacy and the topic of democracy. The theoretical part provides important insights into the risks to democracy posed by today's media environment and how media literacy is a potentially effective tool for mitigating these risks. The results of the research were obtained by analyzing the data obtained from a survey disseminated via the internet. The survey consists of 10 questions related to knowledge of media literacy and 7 questions in which the respondent self-assesses his / her media literacy skills. In addition, the survey includes questions about the potential factors that influence media literacy. The obtained results were analyzed with the help of statistical methods and the following are the most important conclusions: the average level of media literacy among Latvian students is 3.72 / 5. There is a statistically significant difference between respondents’ knowledge of media literacy and respondents' self-assessment of skills - 3.83 / 5 vs. 3.6 / 5. The following factors have a statistically significant impact on the level of media literacy among Latvian students: the language used in secondary school, the language used in high school, prior media literacy training, political involvement and the location of the university / college. The following factors do not statistically significantly affect the level of media literacy of Latvian students: gender, field of study, civic involvement, high appreciation of democracy and freedom of expression.
