In the paper were researched map reading skills and peculiarities in orienteering, the cognitive processes that are used in the field of map reading, as well as various factors that influence these processes. In order to achieve the aim of work, the author studied the available information about orienteering maps and their structure, map reading skills and the processes that are performed during map reading. Two small groups of orienteers (students of the orienteering department in Sigulda Sports school and experienced orienteers who have been a part of Latvian national team) were surveyed and observed to observe the peculiarities of the cognitive processes involved in map reading: attention and short-term memory. Research question: What is the focus point while reading a map for orienteers with different experience? The question was clarified. In the course of work, it was concluded that there are differences in map reading skills between orienteers with different levels of experience; experienced orienteers are aware of what they look for in the map during map reading process; orienteers with less experience are unable to identify the peculiarities of their map reading; both groups of orienteers focuses more on orienteering symbols while reading the map. The Bachelor’s Thesis consists of a title page, introduction, the main part, which includes 5 chapters and 2 subsections, the conclusions, the list of references and the appendix.
