Introduction: Smoking has always been and continues to be a significant problem, positively correlated with cardiovascular diseases, which remain the most common cause of death worldwide year after year. Despite health institutions efforts to reduce the number of smokers, a new way of nicotine intake has emerged today - vaping. It is easy to use, widely available, and falsely advertised as a harmless alternative to regular nicotine cigarettes. This, in turn, increases the total number of smokers, globally worsening human health and shortening life expectancy. Aim: To investigate from a psychosocial point of view why e-cigarettes have become so popular, why people choose this particular way of nicotine intake, whether people believe the advertisements about its lesser health damage, or choose this alternative to regular cigarettes for other reasons, and to compare the respondents' thoughts with the advertised and real information about their health risks compared to regular nicotine cigarette smoking. Materials and methods: To collect data, an anonymous questionnaire was created on eu.jotform.com, which included questions about e-cigarettes and smoking. The survey was created in Latvian, and the respondents were approached using social media and other online platforms. A total of 248 participants' results were obtained and analyzed using the same website. All participants were informed that their responses were anonymous. Results: Most young people start to smoke before the age of 18. 81.45% of respondents have tried e-cigarettes, and out of 138 smokers, 71% of people were e-cigarette users. The main reason for trying smoking is still its popularity, which spreads among friends, as well as the eagerness of young people to try something new. A statistically significant correlation was found between smoking parents and smoking children (Pearson chi-square test, p = 0.001). Conclusions: Based on the obtained data, it can be concluded that the majority, of respondents do not consider e-cigarettes to be less harmful to health, and the other part does not consider it an important factor. Therefore, it can be concluded that the popularity of e-cigarettes is not related to the desire to reduce health risks. It can be seen, that the main reasons for the popularity of e-cigarettes among young people are their more convenient use in most places, without an unpleasant smell, and, on the contrary, with attractive aromas.
