99% of the total number of enterprises in Latvia are micro and small (MMEs), but their activity has been little studied. The aim of the Master's thesis "The Evaluation of Latvian Small and Micro Enterprises' Performance and Involvement in International Transactions in the Context of the EU VAT System" is to provide information on the economic activities of Latvian SMEs, especially micro-enterprises, and their involvement in cross-border transactions, as well as to identify the most significant problems of MMEs in the application of VAT. By analysing Eurostat, CSB and SRS data, it has concluded that MMEs play an important role in the economy and are actively involved in cross-border transactions, especially in the sphere of services and in the EU single market. By evaluating the VAT regulation, it has concluded that the most important problem for MMEs is not the too low VAT exemption threshold, but the exceptions to the application of this threshold. The thesis has 104 pages and it includes 14 tables, 24 figures, 12 appendices.
