As a fundamental part of communication, pragmatic competence plays an essential role in the process of language learning. In Latvia, there is a relatively new education project, Skola 2030 which requires the students to demonstrate their mastery of a topic and to use their knowledge in real life situations. The aim of the present paper is to see how pragmatic competence is developed in form 10, with a particular focus on speech acts, such as requests and refusals. The case study consists of qualitative and quantitative analysis, including such tools as analysis of course books, pre- and post-questionnaires, and observation of the learners in form 10. The collected data proved that the created lesson plans and designed materials do enhance the students’ pragmatic competence. Hence, the materials that were used in the lessons are suitable for B2 level groups, to raise students’ awareness of appropriate language use in the EFL classroom.
