The topic of this bachelor's thesis is “Linguistic Divergence in North and South Korea”. The work examines the differences between the Korean language used by North and South Korea, which developed due to different political and economic conditions after the division of the peninsula. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the significance of the differences between the North Korean and South Korean literary languages, to understand the causes of these differences and to find what measures have been taken so far to reduce the divergence of the two languages. Taking into consideration the different language policies and socio-political conditions of the two Koreas, as well as the fact that the standard languages of the two countries are based on the dialects of different regions, the following hypothesis was made: the main differences between the North Korean and South Korean languages are in pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary. The first part of this thesis provides a brief overview of the language policies pursued by the two Koreas after the division of the peninsula in order to gain a deeper understanding of the causes for the language differences and their further development. The second part examines specific differences between the languages spoken in both Koreas, that is, the cultural language in North Korea and standard language in South Korea. In the third part, solutions proposed by linguists for reducing the divergence of the Korean language are compiled. It was concluded that the hypothesis is correct and the main differences between the North Korean and South Korean languages are seen in pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary.
