Stroke is a cerebrovascular disease that affects several million people and is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the world. More common is ischemic stroke, also known as cerebral infarction (CI). Increased migration and proliferation of neuroblasts and number of astrocytes are observed in the relatively widely studied acute phase of CI, however there is lack of studies about these changes in the long-term after CI. The aim of this study is to investigate long-term changes in neuroblast proliferation and number of astrocytes, based on DCX, BrdU and GFAP signal in cells 6 months after intraluminal filament-induced experimental CI in mice. The results of this study show that 6 months after experimental CI, there is increased neuroblast proliferation in SVZ and increased number of astrocytes in the dentate gyrus (DG) hippocampal region.
