Changes in mitochondrial function occur within minutes of ischemic stroke, but little is known about the ongoing processes months after ischemia and circulatory reperfusion damage. This study investigated the long-term effects of ischemic stroke on the activity of ischemic and non-ischemic hemisphere cortical and hippocampal mitochondria in filament-induced middle cerebral artery occlusion model mice. The results show that six months after the experimental ischemic stroke, there is no change in mitochondrial activity between the brain hemispheres, while oxygen consumption and ROS production are lower compared to 2, 3 and 4 months data. These findings provide new knowledge of the long-term effects of ischemia and reperfusion on mitochondrial function in both cerebral hemispheres
