The research study focuses on the analysis of Martyrdom in medieval Livonia in the 13th century. The main objective of the master thesis is to develop a methodological approach that helps to identify the presence of spirituality and hagiographic practices in medieval Livonia. The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia is the first and most important historical source that tells the story of events happening in the historical space in the territory of Latvia and Estonia in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. To identify the presence of the Christian hagiography and potential signs outlining veneration of saints, 14 episodes of the Chronicle of Henry that describe the phenomenon of Martyrdom were analysed. The methodological approach is based on slow-changing hagiographic narratives identified in the hagiographical tradition of the Roman Church, as well as similarities and factors within the narratives that unite them. The results of the study showcase that it is possible to identify the presence of the phenomenon of Martyrdom in medieval Livonia, as well as recognize periods of the development of spiritual and hagiographic practices. Thus, the study highlights that the text of Chronicle of Henry of Livonia is not only a chronicle of the Crusades, but also a theologically and liturgically oriented narrative.
