Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, which occurs in small concentrations in nature due to cosmic radiation, as well as artificially due to nuclear fission processes as a result of neutron induced nuclear transmutation reactions. Tritium can be used in a nuclear fusion reaction with deuterium to produce energy in fusion reactors such as the International Thermonuclear Fusion Experimental Reactor (ITER). Most of the tritium inventory in the world is produced by nuclear fission reactors (in which it is a waste product). However, since it is a reagent for nuclear fusion, a method is needed to separate it efficiently and inexpensively from other hydrogen isotopes. Proton exchange membrane electrolysis is a promising method for tritium enrichment. The efficiency of this method can be improved by using a graphene-membrane composite material. Within the framework of this research an experimental system and proton exchange membranes with graphene coating have been made and electrolysis of tritiated water has been carried out using proton exchange membrane electrolyzers. The effect of the initial tritium concentration in the tritiated water as well as graphene presence impact on the isotope separation factor for tritiated water electrolysis using proton exchange membrane electrolyzers has been evaluated.
