Title: Prevalence of depression and anxiety among working medical students in Latvia Author: Evija Anna Nusberga Supervisor: Dr.med. Laura Ķevere Introduction: Mental disorders such as depression and anxiety are prevalent worldwide. This issue is frequently encountered among both medical professionals and students. Objective: To determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms among working medical students in Latvia and to examine whether working medical students have higher levels of depression and anxiety compared to their non-working counterparts. Materials and Methods: The study involved 140 respondents. Anonymous online surveys in Latvian were used to collect data. The PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) was used to identify depression symptoms, while the GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7) was used to determine anxiety symptoms. Descriptive statistics, non-parametric statistical methods such as the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test (H) with a confidence interval of 95%, Spearman's correlation coefficient (rs), and Cronbach's alpha coefficient (α) were applied to the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scales. Results: 60,71% (n = 85) of respondents confirmed depression and 64,29% (n = 90) anxiety symptoms, with 77,14% (n = 180) of respondents working alongside their medical studies. Most respondents, 27,14% (n = 32), worked more than 0.5 FTE per month, and 61,43% (n = 86) worked at a single workplace. Using Spearman's correlation analysis, differences were found in the average depression scale scores between working and non-working medical students. However, no significant difference was found between the amount of workload per month and average depression scale results among medical students. Conclusions: Working concurrently with medical studies affects the psychoemotional state of students, influencing the prevalence of depression and anxiety.
