The Bachelor thesis “Reason and emotions: Descartes, Hobbes, Damasio” is a research about the role of emotions in rationality. It is based on three major works: Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes, Passions of the soul by Rene Descartes and Descartes error: emotion, reason and the human brain by Antonio Damasio. The main topic discussed is the attempts of those three thinkers to explain the origins of emotions and reason. In introduction there are given insight in general positions of all three authors and explanation of several concepts, which is connected with the main topic. In first part of the thesis Descartes’s understanding about the roots of emotions and reason is described, it is followed by Hobbes’ philosophical views on the same subject. In the next chapter Antonio Damasio’s ideas about the nature of emotions by are described. The aim of this part is to show that rationality stems from emotions and that they imply one another. In the fourth chapter there is a comparison between views by Damasio and the two different kinds of opinion by Hobbes and Descartes. Main conclusion arises from the comparisons of the ideas of authors, when it is seen that neither of them couldn’t left out emotions, when they tried to portray reason. It is revealed, that Damasio’s approach to human nature is empirical and in this aspect it is similar to Hobbes theory. Damasio’s point of view offers much bigger importance for the role of body rather than for the role of soul and thus show emotions like something, which made possible for reason to emerge.
