Prisoners, as every person have a right to due health care; this is governed by both the international and national law. In the present Master's Paper, therefore, studying of the international and national legal framework governing health care of persons convicted with imprisonment has been defined as the task of the Paper. For the attainment of the aim of the Master's Paper, international agreements of the United Nations Organisation, European Union level recommendations and regulations, as well as national legal framework of the Republic of Latvia and the practice in the field of health care of prisoners were analysed.
As a result of the study, incompliances of the national laws with the international framework were identified. These incompliances concern living conditions at the imprisonment places, which have a direct influence on health condition of prisoners. Another subject examined in the framework of the Master’s Paper was the possibility to improve health care of prisoners.
