Abstract
In total 1462 pupils from 90 classes in 56 schools participated in the study (Table 1). Participants in Year 5 were predominantly 11-12 years old (95%, M = 11.51, SD = .573), while those in Year 7 were 13-14 years old (97%, M = 13.36, SD = .557). The distribution by sex was balanced in both age groups: there were 307 boys and 334 girls in Year 5, and 409 boys and 412 girls in Year 7. Overall, 51% of respondents were girls (n=743). The majority of respondents were from Riga and the Near Riga region (26%), but all regions of Latvia were quite evenly represented in the study.
The study is representative at the level of the Latvian education system. Given that in the 2021-2022 school year there were 17,859 and 20,566 pupils in Year 5 and Year 7 in 632 Latvian general education institutions (excluding special education institutions) implementing general basic and secondary education programmes (Ministry of Education, 2022), a representative sample participated in the research which allows generalisation of results to the 38,425 pupils in Year 5 and 7 with less than 2.6% error, to the 17,859 pupils in Year 5 with less than 4% error, and to the 20,566 pupils in Year 7 with 3.5% error (Fisher et al., 1995).
