Abstract
The aim of the research was to discover relationships between moral identity, moral foundations, patriotism and nationalism. There were 251 participants in the study, 192 women and 56 men. Four surveys were used in the study - The Self-Importance of Moral Identity Scale (SIMI, adapted by Ieva Mālkalniete-Čelika, 2014), Moral Foundations Questionnaire: 30-Item Full version-MFQ 3 Ingrīda Trups-Kalne, 2012), Patriotism and Nationalism scale, authors Jaunzeme, Austers and Silkāne, a set of 9 questions on the Moral Basis of Freedom/Oppression (Iyer et al., 2012), adapted by Mūrmane, 2024, within this study. The study revealed statistically significant correlations between the factors of constructive patriotism and pride in one's country and the internalization and symbolization of moral identity. No statistically significant relationship was observed for the nationalism factor with either the internalization or symbolization. There are statistically significant associations between all five moral foundations and three factors of the patriotism/nationalism scale – pride in one's country, constructive patriotism and nationalism. The correlation of nationalism with the moral foundations of care/harm and fairness/reciprocity is weaker than the correlations with the moral foundations of ingroup/loyalty, authority/respect, and purity/sanctity. The factor of ethnic equality does not significantly reflect beliefs based on moral intuitions. The moral foundation of loyalty predicts all four factors of national identification.
