Abstract

Maģistra darbs atspoguļo rases un etniskās piederības raksturojumu Zeidijas Smitas romānā „Baltie Zobi”. Rase un etniskā piederība vienmēr ir bijuši jūtīgie jēdzieni īpaši pēc Otrā pasaules kara beigām. Jēdzienu nokrāsa mainījās, kas globalizācija dzēš robežas starp kultūrām un jauna pieeja ir nepieciešama, lai no jauna izprastu šo jēdzienu nozīmi. Tika secināts, ka atšķirības starp cilvēkiem ir sociāli konstruētas un jēdzienu nozīme nemitīgi mainās. Zeidija Smita atspoguļo pozitīvu imigranta tēlu, kā pasaules pilsoni, ī[aši atzīmējot vēstures un kultūras sakņu nozīmi multikulturālā sabiedrībā.

The present Master Thesis depicts how notions of race and ethnicity are presented in Zadie Smith’s novel White Teeth. Race and Ethnicity have always been sensitive terms, especially after the end of World War II. The colouring of the terms changes as globalization makes the borders between cultures transparent and a new way of addressing these issues becomes necessary. It was concluded that differences among people are socially constructed and the meaning of terms changes. Zadie Smith draws a positive image of an immigrant as a citizen of a global world, emphasising the importance of history and roots of every individual in a multicultural society.
